How a writer became a teacher.

Word by Word

I love to write. And I love to teach. So I happily wear both hats.

I first put on my writer/editor hat more than thirty years ago, and I have been generating and sharpening written content ever since, freelance and as a staffer and executive in for-profit, non-profit, and education.

Along the way, people began asking me to teach them to write, and to read, and to do both in English as a second language. So I put on another hat, and I've never taken it off.

Highly personal focus.

As a writer and editor, I succeed only when your project succeeds. As a tutor, I succeed only when your student succeeds.

Writing

Typing on a Computer

A feel for words. Memos to marketing. Ghostwriting to grantwriting.

Full range of applications from a writer with more than thirty years of staff and upper-management experience. I have led organizations as president of a private company and as executive director of a nonprofit organization. I know how to convey the message of an enterprise.

Editing

Pencils

A sharp eye and a sharp pencil. Copy to content. Brochures to books.

Full range of editing services from a highly collaborative, unreconstructed grammar geek and stickler for detail. I stop only when you feel both the spirit and the letter of your project are exactly right.

Leticia D., award-winning Brazilian journalist:

"Bob is a wonderful tutor. He masters the ability to find the precise words to improve any essay, but that's not all. He is also kind and friendly, besides knowing how to make a divine hot chocolate for his students! He helped me with my three applications for grad schools, and the results couldn't have been better: I got accepted to all the programs I applied for! With Bob's assistance, everything becomes easier."

Abby Skrivan, English teacher, Albany Middle School:

“Bob is a miracle worker! He has the unique ability to harness students’ interests and talents to help them tackle their challenges. His students are much more motivated. They understand the steps to take to complete their work successfully.”

Nathan D. and Leigha S., Berkeley:

"Our 12-year-old son started working with Bob a few months ago, and the gains he's made in that short amount of time are incredible. His teachers have told us they've seen a big boost in his confidence. And he actually really likes writing now! We can't recommend Bob highly enough. He is a true mensch."

Dean D., 4th grade, Washington School, Berkeley:

"Bob is really nice. He improves your writing in a fun way."

Preston Tucker, Berkeley parent and Oakland high-school teacher:

“We struggled (and sometimes battled) to get our son to put care and craft into his writing, but Bob has him actually looking forward to doing grammar worksheets and revising his essays. It might be that Bob makes a great glass of lemonade, but I suspect that it has much more to do with the patience, kindness, enthusiasm, and encouragement that Bob serves up in even greater portions.”

Marsha Rhynes, English teacher, Oakland Technical High School:

“Dedicated, insightful, a true champion for academic and personal student success: Robert Menzimer is a positive and supportive tutor.”

Jessica E., student, Berkeley High School:

“I’ve definitely become a better writer. Bob gets my essays really organized. My vocabulary has gotten a lot better because of his help with essays, and I’ve learned a lot of words for SAT as well. I feel a lot more prepared for the SAT. He has also taught me the value of using academic language. I would definitely recommend him as a tutor and, in fact, I have recommended him to friends.”

John W., parent, Carlsbad, CA:

“Working with Bob has been an incredible gift to our son and family. He has elevated our son’s writing ability from nearly incoherent to being the top student in his freshman English class (which is part of a nationally recognized school). Because of Bob, our son’s work is repeatedly called out in class as the standard-bearer for excellence, as well as used as promotional material for his previous college prep middle school. Most importantly, Bob has not only taught our son to be a wonderful writer, he has germinated a seed that has now turned into a joy for writing. We have been able to work with Bob when we lived in the Bay Area and have seamlessly transitioned to online tutoring from Southern California. I recommend Bob to the highest degree.”

William W., 9th grade student, Carlsbad, CA:

"Bob is a wonderful writing mentor who has helped me get out of the small tight box of writing I was in, leading me out into the light letting my true self able to write to my heart's desire."
